Smashdodes
A downloadable board game
Overview
Smashdodes is a Print,Build&Play two-player dice match-off with the aim of knocking your opponent's twenty-sided die (D20) into the Out-of-Bounds (OoB) area to win.
Each player has a set of dice (dodes), taking turns to either drop-roll one into the centre of the board, or use one already in-play to launch an attack. A dode can physically strike an opponent's if its face value is equal to or greater than the one being attacked.
Dodes that roll off the board (Out-of-Play) are returned to the player for use on their next turn. Dodes knocked OoB are removed from play (KO) until the next game.
Game Build
To play Smashdodes, you will need:
- 14 dice:
- Split into two sets of different colours or markings - 7 per player:
- 2 x D4 (four-sided)
- 2 x D8 (eight-sided)
- 2 x D10 (ten-sided)
- 1 x D20 (twenty-sided)
- Add the Referee (D12) and Joker (D6) for more gameplay dynamic.
- Build the game board:
- There are loads of places online (or in person!?) that can print the A1 300dpi design and mail.
- I recommend Mod Podge for gluing and finishing the board.
- Alternatively draw onto a surface: 42cm wide octagon inside another 50cm wide. Central 6cm wide circular target.
- Construct the board so that dodes will fall off the edge of the outer octagon, making it clear when a dode is OoB or OoP.
Gameplay
Two players sit on opposite sides of the board with a set of dodes each. Both players roll their D20. Highest roll takes first turn.
On your turn, either:
1 - Roll a dode onto the central target:
- Drop-roll one of your Out-of-Play dodes onto the central target area - the 6cm-wide dotted circle.
- If any opponent dodes are sat in the target (or touching the dotted line), your dode may strike them directly, irrespective of face values.
- You may roll in a way that collides with any opponent dodes on the board after landing within the target, irrespective of face values.
2 - Attack:
- Use one of your dodes already in-play to attack an opponent’s dode by physically striking it from above or rolling into it from any angle.
- A dode can attack an opponent's dode if its face value is equal to or greater than the one it is attacking.
- Note for D10: Lowest face value: 0, highest face value: 9.
- Note for D4: The face value is the visible number closest to the board (bottom of the pyramid).
Rolling Out
- Out-of-Bounds (OoB): If a dode lands in the OoB area or with its bottom face touching the border, and remains on the board, it is removed from the game (KO).
- Out-of-Play (OoP): If a player's dode rolls completely off the board, it is returned to them for use on their next turn.
Rules of the Roll
- Once a dode is chosen, it is the only one you can roll that turn.
- You cannot attack or aim for your own dodes directly. If you hit one of your dodes first during a roll, you forfeit the rest of your turn.
- If a rolled dode misses all others and goes OoB or OoP, you must re-roll it.
- You have up to three attempts at rolling a dode. After the third unsuccessful roll, the dode is KO, removing it from the game.
- If your dode rolls off the board after an attack, it is returned to you but also voids any dodes that may have landed OoB as a result of your roll. These are returned to their players for use next turn.
- If, on your turn:
- you already have one or more dodes on the board and your opponent doesn't, you can elect to skip your turn.
- you have no OoP dodes left to roll in, and no dodes in-play that can attack, you skip your turn.
- You cannot skip your turn if any other actions are available.
- you already have one or more dodes on the board and your opponent doesn't, you can elect to skip your turn.
Additional Dodes
The Referee and Joker are optional. Before the first game, players decide who is assigned "even", the other "odd".
Referee Dode (Black&White D12)
The Referee is drop-rolled onto the target at the start of each game and determines who takes first turn - depending on its face value being odd or even.
- If the Referee is knocked OoP:
- the original rolled dode is KO until the next game.
- If this was a D20, the player loses the game.
- It's then placed back at the centre of the target and play continues with the next player's turn.
- the original rolled dode is KO until the next game.
- If the Referee is knocked OoB:
- it is considered KO until the next game.
- either player can now roll in the Joker on their next turn.
Joker Dode (Blank D6)
- If the Referee is KO, players have the option to:
- roll-in the Joker dode for their turn just like any other dode.
- use the in-play Joker for their turn to attack any opponent dode on the board, irrespective of face value.
- Players can attack the Joker with any dode in play, irrespective of face value.
- If the Joker is:
- rolled or knocked OoP, it is placed at the centre of the target and play continues with the next player's turn.
- knocked OoB, it is KO and removed from the game.
Special thanks to my mate Daniel for the gift of the original wooden box that inspired the game - see image - I've not met the original builder. Also for the many hours putting up with me during test play.
